The Black Label Deck John Lucero Mash Up Custom Cross Shape (10.0) brings together decades of independent skateboarding history, unmistakable John Lucero artwork, and a distinctive old-school shape built for skaters who prefer a wider, more substantial board. Measuring 10 inches wide and 32.875 inches long, this signature pro model combines Black Label's traditional 7-ply hardwood maple construction with an adjustable wheelbase and a uniquely squared-off tail. Designed for skaters who appreciate speed, stability, and unconventional shapes, the Mash Up is equally suited for aggressive transition skating, backyard pools, slappy grinds, and cruising through the streets.
The bottom graphic features a striking turquoise-green stained wood background with a chaotic collage of vintage Black Label imagery created by John Lucero. Bright electric blue lettering dominates the center, layered over distressed black-and-yellow patterns, hot pink accents, fragmented typography, and an intense illustrated face peering through the overlapping graphics. The artwork incorporates distorted Lucero lettering, geometric shapes, and rough, photocopied textures that capture the raw, underground attitude Black Label has maintained since its earliest days. Near the tail, a circular black Emergency Black Label emblem features the company's signature cross and flame symbol. The combination of vibrant colors, layered artwork, and exposed wood grain gives the deck a distinctive appearance without losing the unmistakable Black Label identity.
The top of the deck pictured features a dark charcoal-black stained wood veneer with visible natural grain running vertically through the board. A small circular Black Label insignia sits between the front truck mounting holes, while a larger white Emergency Black Label logo occupies the lower center. The large emblem features a medical-style cross containing the signature Black Label flame, surrounded by circular lettering. The contrast between the understated top and the heavily layered bottom artwork adds another dimension to the design. Top and bottom wood stains are assorted and may vary from the photographs, giving individual decks their own distinct appearance.
One of the most interesting features of the Mash Up is its custom 10-inch Cross Shape, a silhouette closely associated with John Lucero's early skateboard designs. Unlike a traditional popsicle deck, the Cross Shape features a broad, rounded nose, generous standing platform, and a noticeably squared-off tail with angled corners. The shape draws heavily from late-1980s skateboard design while incorporating the functional characteristics needed for modern skating. Its substantial width provides additional room for foot positioning, making it especially appealing to skaters who enjoy carving bowls, locking into grinds, and maintaining control through faster transitions.
A standout feature is the double-drilled front truck mounting pattern, which allows skaters to select between a 15.5-inch or 16-inch wheelbase. The shorter setting provides a slightly more responsive turning feel, while the longer setting offers additional stability for higher-speed skating, larger transitions, and wider carving lines. This versatility allows the board to accommodate different skating preferences without requiring a completely different deck. Combined with its mellow concave and functional double-kick design, the Mash Up offers a comfortable platform for skaters who want the character of a classic shaped board without sacrificing everyday functionality.
Built using traditional 7-ply North American hardwood maple laminate, the deck delivers the familiar pop, strength, and durability associated with quality skateboard construction. Its 10-inch width and longer wheelbase make it particularly suitable for larger trucks and wider wheel setups, while the Cross Shape provides the stability needed for pool coping, banks, ditches, and transition skating. Whether you're skating concrete parks around Monrovia and Arcadia, finding curbs throughout Pasadena and Altadena, or putting together a wider setup for the varied terrain around the San Gabriel Valley, this is a board designed to accommodate a broad range of approaches to skateboarding.
John Lucero is one of the original pioneers of modern street skateboarding and the founder of Black Label Skateboards, established in 1988. Coming out of the Southern California skate scene, Lucero helped shape the transition from traditional vertical skating toward the street-oriented progression that defined the late 1980s and early 1990s. His influence extends well beyond his own skating, having established a brand that consistently prioritizes individuality, artistic expression, and independence over industry trends. Throughout its history, Black Label has supported influential riders including John Cardiel, Jeff Grosso, Jason Adams, Gino Iannucci, Salman Agah, and many others who helped define different generations of skateboarding. Lucero's distinctive hand-drawn artwork, unconventional skateboard shapes, and commitment to keeping skateboarding authentic remain central to the company's identity.
The Mash Up graphic reflects that history by combining elements of Black Label's past into a single visually aggressive design. Rather than simply reproducing a vintage graphic, Lucero brings together different artistic influences and familiar imagery to create something that feels both nostalgic and contemporary. For longtime Black Label supporters, the deck represents decades of independent skateboard design. For younger skaters discovering shaped boards, it offers a connection to the period when skateboard companies were experimenting with wider platforms, unusual silhouettes, and artwork that didn't follow conventional expectations.
The Black Label John Lucero Mash Up features a 10.0-inch width, 32.875-inch length, adjustable 15.5-inch or 16.0-inch wheelbase, custom Cross Shape, mellow concave, and traditional 7-ply North American maple construction. Finished with John Lucero's signature Mash Up artwork, assorted wood stains, and classic Emergency Black Label branding, this deck brings together functional design and an important piece of skateboarding history. Grip tape is not included.
